A challenging adventure began in June 1984, when a small group of couples gathered to explore the possibility of establishing a new church in the Greater West Chester area. Over the next several weeks, interested families met in homes to discuss and pray about a different kind of church ministry. As they prayed and interacted during that summer, they sensed God’s leading to take the next step.
Stepping out in faith, they agreed to take on the full support of Jim Stevens as pastor. Jim’s background involved serving as area director of Campus Crusade for Christ, and several years serving as an associate pastor at the Church of the Saviour in Wayne. In September, 1984, a series of Sunday evening meetings began, and approximately 160 people met for eight weeks. At the end of those eight weeks, it was obvious that God was doing something special and was actually calling a new work into existence. Christ Community Church was chosen as the name of the new congregation and morning services and Sunday School began Thanksgiving weekend, 1984.
Over the years the church body met at local school facilities, until a permanent church was built on 1190 Phoenixville Pike, West Chester. On October 7, 1990 the existing location and home for Christ Community Church was dedicated. Since that time, not only have our regular Sunday services and classes enjoyed a permanent home, but the building became increasingly used for a variety of other church and community programs. Staff members were added as ministries began to expand. In August 2001, following an exciting building campaign, leadership commitment and prayer walk, groundbreaking for an addition took place to support the growth of our ministries and growing attendance. The chapel, student center, lobby renovations and offices were completed in the summer of 2003.
Today, hundreds of volunteers minister in a wide variety of ministries. We remain committed to our vision: to be a gathered and scattered community of Christ’s followers. We are excited to see how God will move us forward in growth and outreach over the next months and years ahead.
